Prototype Engineer
- Lead the design, assembly, and testing of prototypes for new products, processes, or systems within defined specifications and timelines.
- Collaborate with engineering, design, and manufacturing teams to interpret project requirements into innovative prototype concepts.
- Utilise CAD tools, rapid prototyping, and hands-on fabrication techniques to create and iterate physical models.
- Identify, source, and manage materials and components required for prototype builds, ensuring timely procurement and correct specification.
- Plan, conduct and document prototype validation tests, analysing results to provide recommendations for design improvements.
- Ensure prototypes meet all safety, quality, and compliance standards, addressing any issues promptly during the development cycle.
- Maintain clear, accurate, and up-to-date records of prototype builds, design revisions, and testing outcomes.
- Support new product introduction by preparing prototypes for pilot production and providing technical feedback to improve manufacturability and scalability.
- Contribute expertise in materials selection, component integration, and manufacturability assessment for a diverse range of engineering projects.
- Participate in cross-functional meetings, maintaining open communication with stakeholders and contributing to problem-solving discussions.
Essential Skills and Experience for a Prototype Engineer
- Strong hands-on experience in prototype engineering, product development, or related fields within a manufacturing or R&D environment.
- Proficiency with CAD design software (such as SolidWorks, CATIA, or AutoCAD) and rapid prototyping technologies (including 3D printing, CNC machining, and manual fabrication).
- Proven track record in prototype testing and validation, including data analysis and reporting.
- Excellent technical problem-solving skills, creativity, and the ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced development setting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document processes and present findings to multi-disciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of materials science, mechanical systems, and relevant manufacturing processes.
- Experience with cost estimation, supplier liaison, and maintaining workshop equipment would be advantageous.
- Background in engineering, product design, manufacturing technology or a related discipline (degree or equivalent preferred).
